About the house

The Ranch, previously known as ‘Groom’s Cottage’, was commissioned in 1882 by Henry Moore, 3rd Marquess and 8th Earl of Drogheda, for the head groom of his estate. 

The ornate Victorian home was designed by renowned architect William Isaac Chambers and has since been named a protected structure, with careful restoration undertaken in 2004. 

It is located in the heart of Monasterevin town, which is colloquially known as ‘the Venice of Ireland’ thanks to its waterways. In 2019, Sean and Audrey happened to drive by the house and spotted a ‘for sale’ sign. Having both secretly admired the house for many years, they immediately went about doing everything possible to make it their forever home.

About the food

It had long been a dream of Audrey’s to become a chef and upon buying this home she felt that it would be the perfect place to bring her dream to life, the historic house creating a wonderful venue for an intimate evening of good food and relaxation. 

Her hope is to make guests feel welcome and relaxed, by doing everything possible to make their evening both enjoyable and memorable. She has prepared a delicious seven-course tasting menu, which can be adapted to meet everyone’s preferences and needs. 

Additional plates will also be provided during the meal, such as homemade breads, butters and herb oils, sauces, vegetable dishes, along with teas, coffees and petit fours to finish off the evening. 

Wine pairing is also offered alongside the tasting menu, as is a full wine list should guests prefer to choose their own.  

Having eaten in JP McMahon’s Michelin starred restaurant Aniar in 2015, Audrey has been a great admirer of his work. 

In late 2019 she undertook a 6-week complete Irish cookery course with him, also going on to work with him in 2020 to improve upon her skills.

Audrey takes the techniques that she has learned as well as her love of food and combines them with her own personal flair and ideas to create what she hopes is a menu that you will enjoy at Grooms

Everything served in Groom’s will be made by Audrey in her own kitchen in the Ranch, with each guest also receiving a small momento from the kitchen to bring home.

Wine pairings by Jean Smullen

Wine pairings will be chosen by Jean Smullen, WSET Dip, who has been working in the wine business in Ireland for over 27 years. 

A co-presenter for over twelve years on Newstalk’s popular wine slot, ‘Movies and Booze’ with Sean Moncrieff, Jean also writes a wine column for the Sunday World. Jean has presented wine on television for RTS’s 4 Live and is a member of the Circle of Wine Writers.
